The land where Forestview Middle School now sits was once owned by the Potlatch Corporation. Potlatch, a wood products manufacturing company, harvested aspen and jack pine from much of the forest land. This timber harvesting occurred just prior to the Brainerd School District acquiring the land to construct the school and facilities.
Much of the land where aspen was harvested has regenerated naturally with dense stands of aspen trees. The areas of jack pine harvesting did not regenerate naturally. The cut over jack pine areas grew back with a dense cover of shrubs, mainly hazel and raspberry.
